A movement piece with puppets, this show is an elemental reimagining of L. Frank Baum's world of Oz. This is the Tin Man's back story: how a regular human named Nick Chopper came to be a rusting pile of metal in need of a heart. The story, laid out in a spare spoken prologue in this largely wordless piece, involves the witch who rules this part of Oz. Her only apparent vulnerability is an aversion to sunlight. When Nick falls in love with her barefoot slave Nimmee, the witch schemes to prevent their union. She enchants an ax to cut off chunks of Nick, one by one. With prosthetics to replace them, soon he is wholly made of tin. Without a heart, he can no longer love.

THE STORY

SYNOPSIS

From the forgotten writings of L. Frank Baum comes a joyous, heartbreaking, and unique perspective on a classic story of Oz. It tells the tale of the Tin Man, the woman he loved, and the witch that would stop at nothing to kind them apart.

When a lonely woodsman falls for the slave of a powerful witch, will their love be enough to protect them from her wrath? Despite the dangers, a brave woodsman named Nick Chopper and his bride Nimmee, make their escape through the haunted woods and into a happy place where Nick can chop down trees and build a home. The malevolent witch is not to be outwitted, however. She puts a curse on the woodsman's ax, directing it to chop off his limbs one by one. But as fast as the ax shears off a limb, a clever tinker fashions a prosthesis made of tin. The woodsman's head is the last to go, but when it does, the transformation is complete and the Woodsman has become the Tin Man.
